By definition, “trivial” means something of little value or importance. On the surface, this image might seem just that, until you realise what lies above: the famed Santa Monica Pier.

These structural poles are often dismissed as mere necessities, support beams and nothing more. But here, they become the subject. The rising sun casts a cold blue wash across the foreground, while a narrow beam of golden light breaks through and carves a path for the eye. The repetition of lines draws you deeper, creating a hypnotic, almost claustrophobic pull that is intensified by the tight 2:1 crop. Sometimes, beauty hides in the overlooked.
