Purple Haze
Lake Taupo, New Zealand
Lake Taupo is known for its sweeping views of the surrounding mountain ranges, but my focus was set firmly on one thing: capturing the majestic Mt. Ruapehu.
What I didn’t anticipate was just how elusive that moment would be. I attempted this shot on four separate occasions, braving sub-zero winds, getting up early and staying late, only to be met with dense, unforgiving clouds.
Just as I was ready to call it quits, packing up with cold-numbed fingers, the clouds unexpectedly parted. For the briefest window, the sun dipped below the horizon and cast the most ethereal glow across the landscape. Mauve and lilac light reflected off the snow-covered peak and clouds above, while Lake Taupo’s deep blues grounded the scene.
Everything came together in that fleeting moment, a perfect blend of atmosphere, patience, and timing. 'Purple Haze' felt less like a photograph and more like a painting revealed by nature herself.
